Biography
Italian ecclesiastic, a Cardinal in the Roman Catholic hierarchy. He was ordained a priest on March 3, 1957 and earned a doctorate in canon law. Prior to serving in the Vatican's diplomatic service he taught in a seminary. Subsequent to his diplomatic service he became secretary to an archbishop and was named Assessor in 1979. He has held administrative posts since then and was named Bishop on November 7, 1987. On February 21, 2001 Pope John Paul II elevated him to the rank of Cardinal.
