Biography

American businessman, former CEO of Citigroup.

His dad was in construction and he became the only person in his family to graduate from college. With his degree from University of Southern California in music, he had difficulty finding a job. At the advice of friends, he attended night scool to study law and landed a job in 1975 as an attorney at U.S. Steel.

In 1979 he moved on to the financial services industry with a job at Commercial Credit Company and worked his way up the ladder to become executive vice president in 1996. In 2000 he was promoted to chief administrative officer and a year later became COO. The company was folded into Travelers Insurance Company. When Travelers entered difficult straits, he drafted take-over documents while Citigroup made its bid for the company.

In 2003 he was named CEO of Citigroup and assumed the chairman's post in 2006. However, the firm began having difficulty during the initial phases of the subprime mortgage meltdown to hit the US and he stepped down November 4, 2007. In July 2008 he was appointed to the board at Xerox Corporation and he holds director positions at Johnson and Johnson among other companies and institutions.
