Australian-born expatriate writer and spiritualist. She married Campbell Praed, in 1872. He was the younger son of a brewing family who had come to Australia to make his fortune. Four years after their marriage, they moved to England. Having been writing since her teens, Rosa Praed continued her work in England, turning out more than 45 books over her four-decade career. Many of her books are set in Australia. Her first novel, "An Australian Heroine," was published in 1880. Her 1882 work, "Nadine, " earned her a place in London's artistic circles. But In 1897, she left her husband and in 1899, she began living with Nancy Harward, a psychic. With Harward, she explored psychic and spiritual themes, moving from theosophy and spiritualism to Roman Catholicism and back again. She stayed with Harward, whom she thought to have been a Roman slave girl in a previous life, until Harward's death in 1927.
Praed's last years were spent in illness. She died on April 10, 1935 in Torquay, Devon, England. She was 84.
