Biography
French ecclesiastic, a Roman Catholic Cardinal, and the President for the Pontifical Council for Culture. He was ordained a priest on December 18, 1954, and spent the next five years writing and teaching. In 1959, Pope Pius XII appointed him to the Office of the Secretariat of State. After Pope Pius died, Pope John XXIII assigned Poupard as Rector of the Catholic Institute of Paris where he served until February 2, 1979. He was elevated to Titular Bishop of Usula and Auxiliary Bishop of Paris, installed in that office as Archbishop on April 5, 1979. He was then recalled to Rome to become Pro-President of the Secretariat for Non-Believers, and the following year, in 1980, was made President of the Executive Committee of the newly-formed Pontifical Council of Culture. He was elevated to Cardinal on May 25, 1985 and became President of the Pontifical Council for Non-Believers.
