American writer, first published in July 1922. Emily Post became the authority on proper behavior, with a guidebook on manners that became a best-seller through 89 printings and ten editions, selling over a million copies.
The daughter of an architect, she grew up in a life of privilege with servants, summers in the country and old-money class. She married in June 1892; two sons. When her husband had a shocking affair, she had an equally shocking divorce and began to support herself with her writing. After six novels, she wrote her first book of etiquette, a thorough, practical and sincere guide to then and now.
Post died in her Manhattan apartment on 9/25/1960, a week before her 87th birthday.
Date 3 Oct 1873 was given in Biography magazine Dec/2000 with an extensive article.
(Formerly, Robert Jansky in Feminist Movement quoted Astrological Index with a date of 27 October 1872 and a time of 4:25 AM; however the Index gave the date only. Penfield gave the same date with a spec time of 4:45 AM. World Book gives 1873? Americana gives October 3, 1873.)
John Halloran pointed per email on 15 Oct 2014 to http://famouskin.com/family_group.php?name=14923+emily+post&ahnum=1 which has researched her birth data and writes: "Emily (Price) Post's birthdate has been said to be 27 OCT 1872. This appears on her tombstone and the 1900 census agrees with this date. However baptismal records for her brother William Lee Price show that he was born 08 APR 1873. He died just two years later and the birth date on his tombstone appears as 18 APR 1873. In either case, this would indicate that he was born less than 6 months after his sister. I believe her actual date was more likely 27 OCT 1871. This would agree with the 1880 census which gave her age as 8 in June of that year."
