Biography

Italian ecclesiastic and Pope of the Roman Catholic Church on 7/21/1963. He reaffirmed the church's position of no contraceptives and no abortion.

The son of upper middle-class parents, Montini was ordained a priest in 1920. A talented diplomat, he rose in the Vatican hierarchy and at age 65, was named the 262nd pontiff. Lean, dark and intense, he gave no yield of policy on mandatory celibacy for priests and his papal condemnation of birth control. Progressive in other ways, Paul VI put the Mass into common vernacular and campaigned to further racial equality and promote national peace.

In the late 20th century, the church has promoted his sanctification. If so, he would be the fourth pope elevated to sainthood in the last 900 years.

Died of a heart attack on 8/06/1978, Rome.
