Mexican composer active in the 20th century. His work as a composer, music educator and scholar of Mexican music connected the concert scene with a usually forgotten tradition of popular song and Mexican folklore. Many of his compositions are strongly influenced by the harmonies and form of traditional songs. He died on 24 April 1948.
Translation: On 12 Dec. 1882 was baptized in the Church of Fresnillo, Zac., Manuel María Ponce Cuéllar, born at 11 at night on the 8th of that month. (Book No. 10 baptisms of legitimate children, page 63, item 249).
Castellanos quotes birth certificate for same data.
Scholfield also quotes from "Music Since 1900" by Nicolas Slonimsky (1994), p. 537: "Ponce gave his date of birth as 8 December 1886, but he was in fact born at 11:45 PM on 8 December 1882, and baptized on 12 December 1882."
