Biography

Italian thief who pulled off one of the most stunning heists of the 20th century. Ib 7.21.1911, c. 7:30 AM, Paris, he stole Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa from the Louvre in order to "return it to its homeland, Italy." He actually managed to get the painting through customs. Two years later, on 12/11/1913, he gave the painting to one whom he considered to be the top authority in matters of art. Accused and tried, he was given 11 months in prison and the painting was returned to France.

He had first moved to France as a house painter and decorator, a laborer. After his release from prison, he re-entered France secretly where he lived for another decade until his death of a heart attack 10/08/1925, San Maur des Fosses, France.
