Biography
Swedish prime minister, elected on March 21, 1996; prior to the election he was Finance Minister from 1994-96.
Elected to the Parliament in 1979, he spent five years there. He returned to local government, becoming Municipal Commissioner of Katrineholm. He later took on roles as Minister of Education and Science (1989-1991), getting re-elected to Parliament from 1991-94. In 1996, the year he was elected Prime Minister, he became Chairman of the Swedish Social Democratic Party.
Married twice, he has two children from his first marriage.
