Argentinean noted family, the third wife of Juan Peron. Her husband was President 1973-74 and she was Vice President. Upon his death on July 1, 1974, she became the first female President of a Latin American country. Her period as head of state was marked by staggering economic problems and civil unrest. On March 24, 1976 she was deposed in a bloodless military coup. For the next five years she was held in custody. She was tried on corruption charges in 1981 but allowed to go into exile in Spain where she stayed until her 1983 pardon.
