Source Notes
Original entry source notes cited, "M.M. Drew" for a birth date of April 10, 1882 at 5:20 AM in Boston, MA." The entry carried a Rodden Rating of "C" (original source not known." In January 2011, Judith Antonelli writes: "Kirsten Downey, author of THE WOMAN BEHIND THE NEW DEAL (Doubleday, 2009), gives her birth name as Fannie Coralie Perkins (which was later changed to "Frances"; there's no "Mary" anywhere) and her birth date as April 10, 1880. (No time, or even what part of the day, is given.) On p. 105 Downey states: "Frances had also reinvented her age, making herself two years younger. In the mid-1920s, Frances reported her birth year as 1882, two years later than the 1880 that had always appeared in her records before. Whether it was female vanity or unusually bad arithmetic remains unclear. The age adjustment made her the same age as Franklin [Roosevelt], rather than two years older, and put them on a more equal footing." [end of Antonelli's citation]. PT notes that the Frances Perkins Center gives April 10, 1880 as the birth date so it is assumed to be "official."
