Biography
American Indian, a Lakota Sioux convicted of murder in the shooting of an FBI agent. At the time of AIM (American Indian Movement) in the late '60s and early '70s, the FBI entered the reservation of Pine Ridge land without warrants or a prior statement of intent and the Lakotas opened fire. In the trial, the judge stated that it was a case of self-defense on the part of the Indians and there was no specific evidence pointing to Leonard in particular with regard to the FBI agent's death. However, the government could not condone further uprising and Peltier was sentenced to serve two life sentences in Leavenworth penitentiary.
