Biography
Cuban-American baseball player: 1st base, Orioles. On September 23, 2000, Palmeiro hit the 400th home run of his career, against the Angels, becoming only the 32nd player in baseball history to reach the 400-homer level. By the beginning of the 2004 season, he had hit 528 homers. That same year, however, he was embroiled in the steroid use scandal that rocked baseball, appearing in March 2005 before the House of Representatives Government Reform Committee. On March 17, 2005, he testified under oath that he had never used steroids or illegal drugs to enhance his performance. On August 1, 2005 he was suspended for 10 days when a drug test showed the presence of steroids. The athlete claimed, "I have never intentionally used a banned substance…" He now faces a perjury investigation.
