Biography
Greek shipping tycoon and entrepreneur who rose from refugee status to becoming one of the world's richest men. Owner of one of the world's largest independent fleets, he was a pioneer in the construction of super-tankers and gained celebrity status in 1968 when he became the second husband of widow Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy.
The son of Greek tobacco merchant Socrates Onassis and his homemaker wife Penelope, Onassis fled Turkish-occupied Greece to Argentina as a teenager on falsified documents. Landing at Buenos Aires with $250 to his name, he worked as a telephone operator, studying the financial pages and the stock exchanges from London and New York newspapers when work was slow. When his first stock investment paid him $700, he bought a new wardrobe and began to cultivate a sophisticated lifestyle. On the side he began a cigarette production line with his father's tobacco, resulting in soaring profits. With a cousin he launched his career as a merchant in his early '20s, establishing an import-export business trading Greek tobacco, and made his first million in this endeavor by age 25. Purchasing his first ships at scrap metal prices the following year, his prodigious business acumen and talent for troubleshooting tariffs earned him the position of Greek consulate to Argentina.
Onassis marriage to Athina (Tina) Livanos ended in divorce in 1960. They had two children, Alexandros, born 1948 and Christina, born 1950. A headline marriage to Jacqueline Kennedy in 1968 fell into decline four years later. During the marriage, he apparently continued his long-term liaison with Maria Callas.
He died of bronchial pneumonia in Paris on 3/15/1975.

Nicholas Sutherland quotes Willi Frischauer "Onassis" with a date from research. (January 7 OS, p.18) Gunther Menzer quotes a journalist with "Stern" who found the same date from records found in Izmar, Smyrna, Turkey. When Onassis arrived in Buenos Aires he had a temporary travel document and nothing else. He needed an ID card for employment as he was under-age, so he gave September 21, the date of his arrival in Buenos Aries, 1900 to make him old enough to work. To avoid being taunted as a "Turko," he gave Salonika, Greece as his birthplace. When he applied for Argentine citizenship he naturally used the same particulars and they stuck. When he registered for the draft in WW I he swore to that data.
(Drew gave the date of 9/21/1900, 5:58 AM. Dewey stated that his tombstone read 1900. Edith Custer sent a clipping that read, "Onassis registered for the draft in WW I and swore to this date, Salonica."
