Biography
Israeli lawyer and politician, he was Prime Minister of Israel for a short time. Olmert served as mayor of Jerusalem from 1993 to 2003. In January 2005 he rose to the leadership position in thef Kadima Party after Ariel Sharon suffered a stroke and went into a coma. Olmert was then elected Prime Minister in April 2005. Amidst allegations of corruption and bungled leadership, he stepped down as party leader in July 2008 and vacated the Prime Minister's post in February 2009. In September that year he was put on trial on charges of corruption. A few months later additional charges of corruption were brought against him stemmiing from his time as mayor of Jerusalem.
