Biography
American first nuclear explosion, the Trinity Test of the Manhattan Project, supervised by Robert Oppenheimer. From a hundred-foot bomb tower, the devise was detonated, vaporizing the tower and fusing desert sand into a greenish-gray glass. The blast equivalent was that of 15,000 to 20,000 tons of TNT.
The success of the test meant that the atomic bomb could be readied for use against Japan to bring a halt to WW II. At the explosion, Oppenheimer spoke a quote from the Bhagavad Gita, "I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."
George Rodden was a young G.I. stationed in New Mexico who saw the first blast. He said they had gotten up pre-dawn to fuel the planes when they saw the sky light up in the west, not the east, in a mighty burst of white light that rose to a towering black cloud. They were told that a munitions dump had exploded.
