Italian priest, known as the Apostle of Rome, who was noted for founding a society of secular clergy called the "Congregation of the Oratory".
Philip died around the end of the day on 25 May 1595, the Feast of Corpus Christi that year. St Philip Neri was beatified by Paul V in 1615, and canonized by Gregory XV in 1622.
Sy Scholfield quotes two books to assess the date and time of birth:
"Philip Neri: The Fire Of Joy" by Paul Türks (Continuum, 1995), p. 1: "Philip (Filippo Romolo) Neri was born in Florence at two o'clock in the morning of 22 July 1515, and baptized later the same day in the famous baptistry of San Giovanni."
According to the book "St. Philip Neri and the Roman Society of His Times (1515-1595)" by Louis Ponnelle and Louis Bordet (Sheed and Ward, 1979), p. 47: "WHEN Philip was born he was taken, as all Florentine babies were taken, to the Baptistery of San Giovanni, and was inscribed in the register of baptisms for the month of July, 1515: 'Filippo Romolo, son of Ser Francesco di Filippo of Castelfranco, of the quarter of San Pier Gattolini, born on the 21st, at the 6th hour.'"
In Florentine time the date began at sunset. Six hours after sunset (about 7.25pm) on the 21st would be about 1:30 a.m. on the 22nd.
