Biography

A large meteorite (estimated weight in the range of 10'000 metric tons) exploded about 24 km above the area of the Russian city Chelyabinsk, about 1500 kilometers (930 miles) east of Moscow, in the morning around local sunrise. About 1200 people were injured, mostly by glass breaking due to shock waves. Several parts of the metorite hit the ground. Later analysis determined the energy of the explosion to be about 30 times the energy of the Hiroshima bomb.

The incident is peculiar because for the evening of the same day, a close encounter of the Earth with asteroid 2012 DA14 was expected. The asteroid's closest approach was at a distance of about 27'000 km. The meteor incident and the passing asteroid do not seem to be related.

Source Notes

News media and Wikipedia at first reported 9:15 am for the event. A later NASA statement gave 9:20:26 for the entry of the object into the atmosphere, and the explosion somewhat later. It took up to two minutes for the shock wave to reach the ground. A local kindergarden reported its windows to have been shattered at 09:22.
