Biography
California brush fire in the hills above Oakland that had simmered the prior day and had been thought subdued. As it flared up, it began to consume hillsides and property, turning into one of the costliest fires in U.S. history. More than 1,800 houses and nearly 900 apartments were destroyed with 200 more units damaged with a total damage estimate of some $5 billion. The death toll reached 19, 148 were injured and 5,000 people were evacuated.
