Biography
American earthquake centered 35 miles south-west of Seattle, Washington. At 6.8 magnitude, it was a long, rough quake that broke windows, crushed cars in showers of bricks and shattered the nerves of residents of Seattle and Portland. The strongest quake to hit Washington state in 52 years, it knocked out power to extended areas, cracked the dome atop the state capitol at Olympia and hopelessly snarled traffic on freeways and at the airport. Some 250 people were injured and the damage may well approach $2 billion.
