Peruvian-Chilean earthquake, 7.9 Richter, 26 dead at the first report. The quake shook southern Peru on Saturday, leaving many injured with electricity and telephone services cut off in many areas. The epicenter of the quake was 50 miles northwest of the coastal city of
Ocona and felt as far south as neighboring Bolivia. Lasting about a minute, it sent hundreds to local hospitals. At least 15 aftershocks were reported in the first few hours.
By the following day, at least 31 deaths were reported and dozens injured with at least 47 homes demolished.
