Pakistani earthquake, a 7.6 magnitude, with its epicenter near Muzaffarabad, Pakistan, killed more than 50,000, and injured scores more. The earthquake reached into parts of India and Afghanistan with a large number of deaths occurring in Pakistani-controlled part of Kashmir. Rescue workers were unable to reach more remote areas and the death toll continued to rise. President Musharraf and the army sustained great criticism for slow response and inadequate handling of the disaster rescue efforts.
