Indian earthquake, 7.9 Richter, which struck at the time that many cities were beginning celebrations for India's 51st Republic day, commemorating the adoption of the country's constitution. The violent quake epicentered near Bhuj as the largest city (4 million) of Ahmedabad, in the state of Gujurat in North West India near the Pakistani border. Officials estimate as many as 6,000 dead and 14,000 injured in this quake, the strongest to strike the county in 50 years and felt as far as 1,200 miles away.
Within a few days the death toll reached some 12,000 with some estimates going higher.
