Biography
Haitian earthquake that measured 7.0 on the Richter scale and that devastated an already impoverished country. The number of casualties was unknown as of the third day after the earthquake but were estimated to be well in excess of 50,000, perhaps exceeding double that number according to one report. Thousands more were injured and left homeless. Aid and rescue workers who had not been killed or injured offered whatever help they could. Rescue and aid workers, along with medical and law enforcement personnel and needed supplies had difficulty arriving quicklyi because the infrastructure was so badly damaged. Included in the devastation were the UN headquarters, at least three hospitals, churches and aid organization offices.
