Central American earthquake in El Salvador, 7.6 Richter magnitude with hundreds of strong aftershocks that caused a hillside to dislodge dirt and mud a block wide, burying homes and people in the Las Colinas neighborhood of the city of San Salvador. In the first day, 182 bodies were recovered and a few days later, the death toll was estimated at 600 with close to 2,000 injured and 34,000 houses destroyed or uninhabitable. People moved in with relatives or into shelters, with 18,000 evacuated from the most critical areas.

The quake rocked neighboring Honduras and Guatemala and buildings were swaying as far away as Mexico City.
