Biography

George Washington's diary entry, presented as the date and time for the formation of the U.S.A. It is proposed that the country was born when the English surrendered as this is the time when the US was separated from its mother, Great Britain. Prior to then, only France recognized the USA as an independent entity.

The surrender at Yorktown was, at the least, a military action of independence. Though many sources give October 17th as the date of the surrender, research shows this date in error. According to George Washington’s diary, (http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/treasures/trt022.html)

the 17th was the date when peace negotiations began, when "Lord Cornwallis proposed a cessation of hostilities."

The actual surrender was signed October 19th 1781, 11:00 am LMT, Yorktown 37N15 76w30.

Ray White writes, "Under the entry for the19th Washington gives the actual time for the surrender. "In the morning early I had them copied and sent word to Lord Cornwallis that I expected to have them signed at 11 O'clock - and that the division (?) would march out at two O'clock - both of which were accordingly done." This was the time of the signing when the surrender was official, and it was then that our country was born."
