Canadian teacher who came up with the rules for basketball. While teaching physical education at the Springfield Men's Christian Association Training School, Naismith was asked by his superiors to come up with a better program for indoor, winter exercise for the men. He began a thorough study of the nature of popular games and devised the basic rules of basketball. Originally, the goals were two peach baskets hung from posts. He remained a popular proponent of the new sport and the Hall of Fame is named for him.
