Biography
American politician who served in the Maine House of Representatives from 1947-1951 and was the Democratic floor leader from 1949-1951. In both 1953 and 1956 he also was elected Governor of Maine and, in 1958, he was the first Democratic U.S. Senator ever elected by popular vote in Maine.
Muskie died of a heart attack following surgery on 3/26/1996. His wife Jane died in Bethesda, MD on December 25, 2004 of Alzheimer's Disease. She was 77.
