Biography
American seaman, the Chief Officer and second in charge on the ship Maersk Alabama when it was attacked by Somali pirates on April 8, 2009. Murphy is a graduate of Mass Maritime Academy, the son of a professor there. He is married with two children. Murphy took command of the ship after the captain, Richard Phillips, was taken off the ship by the pirates. Murphy then tried to negotiate for Phillips' release but was unsuccessful. Nevertheles, he successfully navigated the ship to safety. Five days later, Phillips was rescued by Us forces in a dramatic shootout with the pirates.
