Biography
American housewife who became famous for the book written about her and subsequent movie, "The Search For Bridey Murphy." She was a housewife married to a car dealer when she met the book's author, Morey Bernstein. He offered to hypnotize her as a means of relieving her allergies, especially incessant sneezing.
In hypnotic sessions, 1952-53, she related a detailed story of her birth in Cork and death in Belfast, Ireland as Bridey Murphy. She told the story in a thick Irish brogue unlike her normal speech. She said she was the daughter of Duncan and Kathleen Murphy, born in 1796, married to Sean Brian MacCarthy in 1818, died in 1864 and that she watched her own burial.
When Bernstein revealed her story, a national controversy arose over the possibility of reincarnation and of memories regarding a former life. For many years she refused all interviews and reluctantly accepted her 5% royalties from the book. She herself had mixed feelings about reincarnation, and 20 years later said that she remembered nothing of what she had said under hypnosis.
In this life, Virginia Burns grew up with relatives in Chicago and denied that she had heard Irish stories and lore as a kid. She married automobile dealer Hugh Tighe; divorced in 1968, she married steel company executive Richard Morrow in 1971. On 7/12/1975, she died, survived by her husband, three daughters, a stepdaughter and stepson, and 10 grandkids.
