Biography
Portuguese poet, and translator as well as politician and administrator for the arts. He has a degree in law but turned to writing as his career and is known primarily as a poet. However his body of work includes novels and essays. One of his best-known translations is that of Dante's Divine Comedy in 1995 for which he was awarded prizes and Shakespeare's Sonnets in 2002. In addition to his writing and translating, he has served as director of the Portuguese national publishing house and has held various positions in cultural organizations. A Social Democrat he has been a member of the European Parliament since 1999..
