Biography
American politician and government official, he was US Secretary of the Interior and Secretaray of Commerce under Presidents Nixon and Ford respectively. In 1969 Nixon named him Chair of the Republican Party; he served in that role until 1971 when he was appointed to Secretary of the Interior. In March 1975 President Ford asked him to take over as Secretary of Commerce. A few months later, January 1976, Ford appointed him as special advisor to the President.
He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1973; he died of the disease on April 19, 1979.
