Indian leader Mohandas Gandhi was assassinated by gunshot. An attorney, considered by some a saint, he spent his lifetime advocating passive resistance to British rule in the interest of nationalism. As India drew closer to independence, during the Hindu-Moslem riots, Gandhi was shot to death by a terrorist carrying a gun behind his offering of flowers. As Gandhi gasped in death, he forgave his assassin.
