Biography
American politician who served as the President of the U.S. from 1817-1825 with a rich background of experience. With the background of being a soldier, a lawyer and a politician, during his 50 years of public service, he held almost every office possible. He was Secretary of State under Madison from 1811-17, when he was inaugurated President on 3/04/1817, and was re-elected in 1820.
Monroe married Eliza Kortright in 1785; they had two daughters. During Monroe's term of office, there was a great business panic in 1819, Alabama entered the union and the U.S. paid Spain $5 million for the purchase of Florida. Maine and Missouri entered the Union and the Monroe doctrine was introduced 12/02/1923. He retired to his home at Oak Hill in Virginia in 1825 and his wife died in 1830.
