Biography
American writer, the author of six novels, a memoir and three collections of poetry before penning his "Becoming a Man: Half a Life Story." The book throws a harsh light on the shame of secrecy that troubles gay youth. In 1992 he won the prestigious National Book Award for the stirring story in which he plumbs the depths of homosexual rage, throwing a glaring light on sexual repression and revealing the conflicted soul of a young man dying of AIDS. Four years prior, his memoir "Borrowed Time" described his lover's death from AIDS.
Neither of Paul's parents knew that he was gay until they read his "Taking Care of Mrs. Carroll," 1978. When his dad heard about his most recent book, he said that his son's success made him feel wonderful, that he loved him dearly. Paul's mom died three years ago (1989).
Monette moved to California about 1978 where he came out of the closet. He believes that it was then when he contacted AIDS, as he and his partner were in an "open" relationship.
Monette died in the evening of 2/10/1995.
