Biography

American photographer who began her career as a model. In 1929 she moved to Paris where she met and worked for Man Ray. She opened her own studio, specializing in portrait and fashion photography but her real interest was in surreal images. Returning to New York in 1932, she opened a successful studio there. Two years later she married an Egyptian businessman and moved with him to Cairo. During her years there desert scenes captured her attention. On a trip to Paris in 1937 she met surrealist artist Roland Penrose and eventually moved in with him in London. During WWII she worked as a fashion photographer for Vogue magazine. One of the few female photographers to cover combat during the war, she covered the London bombings and joined up with the US military forces on D-Day and on follow-up campaigns. She married Penrose in 1947 and thirty years later, July 21, 1977, died in England at age 70.
