Biography

Chinese democracy meetings and discussions had been going on since summer 1988, starting at Beijing University. A number of Chinese intellectuals began publishing papers. On April 15th, a leading voice collapsed and died and the following day, hundreds of students lay wreaths of flowers in the Tianamen Square. Groups of workers, students, intellectuals and protesters began to gather over the next week, petitioning for more democratic government policies.

By April 22nd, the day of Hu’s funeral, thousands had gathered. On the 24th, Students begin a mass boycott of classes in an attempt to pressure Party and government leaders into hearing their requests. Deng Xiaoping’s condemned the movement as a "planned conspiracy" of political foes. On April 27, 150,000 students flooded the Square demanding freedom of the press and student liberties of expression and movement.

On May 17, more than one million marched in the capital, including workers, ACFTU officials, journalists, doctors and nurses. That night at 8:00 PM, China’s top leadership decides to impose martial law in Beijing. Zhao Ziyang resigned. Martial law was put into effect on May 20th. Arrests were made by the thousands and clashes became more violent.

On June 4, all entries to the square were blocked off and troops entered at 2:00 AM. People were warned to leave at 4:00 AM, "for a terrible blood bath is about to take place." Tanks moved in and soldiers opened fire: the number of victims is not known.
