Biography
United States Military Academy at West Point, a four-year military university education designed to turn out officers for the army.
America's blasé indifference to the military turned to contempt during the peace demonstrations of the '50s and it was not until the terrorist attacks of 9/11/2001 that the nation turned once more to appreciation of those who keep the gates of freedom open.
On 10/24/2001, ABC announced that it had made a deal with West Point to promote the military academy for $25 million. It will run a combination of overt commercials and a series of specials on the academy through its many subsidiaries, including ESPN, The History Channel, Lifetime, A&E, ABC Radio and ESPN magazine. Joseph Franklin, a retired general advising the West Point Project, told the Associated Press that it was a "wonderful coincidence" that ABC was featuring the military in a time of war, which also happens to be the 200th anniversary of the U.S. Military Academy. Watch for a prime time special, "Young America Celebrates West Point," next June on ABC, three specials on West Point history and its place in popular culture on The History Channel, and a series of vignettes titled "West Point Minute" that will air on "Good Morning America" and "Nightline." ABC says the vignettes will be clearly marked as advertising.
