Biography
British medical case known from Dr. Ashley Montagu's book "The Elephant Man: A Study in Human Dignity," 1971. Merrick was born into a deformed body: fine of mind and spirit, he proved himself enabled rather than embittered by adversity. He was exhibited as a freak in 1884 and in November of that year, met Dr. Frederick Treves (born 2/15/1853). Treves exhibited him to physicians as a case study and two years after they met, took Merrick into his clinic where he lived for the rest of his life. Merrick died suddenly 4/11/1890.
