Biography

Netherlands politicians in the lower house voted to legalize euthanasia, in the forefront of ground-breaking social acceptance. This is at the fifth Uranus return for Holland: 7/26/1581, 12:00 LMT, The Hague.

The bill passed the Senate on 4/10/2001 and the final step will be the signature by Queen Beatrix, expected within a couple weeks.

This will make the Netherlands the first nation to allow doctors to end the lives of patients with unbearable, terminal illnesses, formalizing a practice discreetly used in Dutch hospitals and homes for decades, turning guidelines adopted by Parliament in 1993 into legally binding requirements that meet the law's strict codes.

The law was not without dissenters: about 10,000 opponents surrounded Parliament at the Hague praying, singing hymns and quoting the Bible while the upper house debated. Some protestors were more dramatic, masked in black and carrying oversized syringes filled with fake blood.

The final vote was 46-28 in favor of the law. Several countries - Switzerland, Columbia and Belgium - tolerate euthanasia. In the U.S., only Oregon has allowed doctor-assisted suicide for the terminally ill since 1996.
