Biography

Brazilian chess grand master, the first Brazilian to obtain the title of Great International Master in 1971. Under the guidance of his mother Maria, Mequinho learned to play chess when he was only five years old. By the time he was nine, he was regularly competing, and he became the Brazilian champion in 1965 at age 13. Two years later he took the South American championship.

Always in poor health and an avowed misanthrope, his career has been periodically interrupted as a result. His fragile physical state caused him to quit playing for 12 years from 1979-1991, when he made his much-awaited comeback. Unfortunately he has never achieved the same level of play that he did in 1977, the high point in his career.

Mequinho is the subject of two biographies, Stephen Gordon’s "Henrique Mecking: Latin Chess Genius," 1995, and Rubens Alberto Filguth’s "Mequinho, the Profile of a Genius," 1983.
