Biography

South African politician, inaugurated president on 6/16/1999. The eldest of four kids, he aimed to become a teacher until he was expelled from his last year in school because of joining a strike. He finished his education privately in 1959. Mbeki traveled to England in 1961 to study economics at the University of London and Sussex, earning his B.A. in 1965 and M.A. in 1966, an economics major. He returned to Africa in 1971, working in different arenas. In 1974 he traveled to the UK briefly to marry Zanele.

In 1993, Mbeki became the ANC chairman. Named the first Deputy President by Mandela in 1994, he took over the leadership of ANC in 1997.
