Biography
American writer and columnist who began writing as a young girl. She entered Yale University in 1971. Her feature article published in the New York Times in April 1972 caught the attention of reclusive author J.D. Salinger. He wrote to her advising the young woman about the dangers of being famous. After an exchange of several letters, she visited him during the summer of 1972 and quit Yale University to stay with him. He broke off the relationship after 10 months. She never returned to Yale but did continue her writing career.
In 1999, she published a memoir called "At Home in the World." That year she made her correspondence with Salinger public after she put the letters up for auction.
Maynard married an artist and had three children. The marriage failed in 1989.
