Flemish writer and political activist.
Matthijs wrote poems, literary criticism and especially a lot of novels and stories.
During the First World War he was a member of the activist Groeninger in Bruges. Matthijs was after the war four months imprisoned, but set free because of his young age without a conviction.
During the interwar years was involved in the Flemish nationalism. For the provincial elections of 1936 he was on a list of the Vlaamsch National Bloc, but was not elected. In 1938 he stood for the local elections on a list 'Christian Block' in St. Cross.
During the Second World War he joined the collaboration of the VNV . From 1941 to 1944 he was mayor of Oedelem. He was convicted after the war for collaboration. He stayed two years imprisoned in the camp of St Cross.
He died 30 August 1964.
