Biography
Danish royalty by marriage, Mary Donaldson was the first Australian to become a royal when she married Prince Frederik of Denmark (heir to the throne) on May 14, 2004 at 4:00 PM in Copenhagen. First one and then the other of the royal couple said "I Do" beginning at 4:46 PM according to the Danish press. The former real estate agent relinquished her Australian & British passports & converted from the
Presbyterian to Lutheran faith).
The youngest of four children, her mother was a secretary and her father a professor of mathematics. Her parents emigrated to Tasmania from Scotland in 1963 and she spent some of her youth in the United States as her father's job took them abroad. She earned a double bachelor's degree in law and commerce. Working in real estate until 2002, she moved to Copenhagen in September that year for a job with Microsoft. She met the Crown Prince at a party, not knowing who he was. The couple hit it off and became engaged in October 2003.
She and her husband welcomed their first child at 1:57 AM on October 15, 2005 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The child was named Christian. On January 8, 2011 she gave birth to twins, a boy born at about 10:30 AM and a daughter born around 10:56 (news reports) in Copenhagen.
