Biography

British royal family, the second daughter of King George VI who was crowned in December 1936 when she was six. She is four years younger than her sister Elizabeth, and was known as a rebellious and somewhat high-handed youngster. As an adult, she became one of the harder-working royals in philanthropic and civic duties. She is known for her insistence upon formality even among close friends.

The Princess had a romance with Peter Townsend in 1953 but he was considered an inappropriate match and they separated on 10/30/1955. She married Anthony Armstrong-Jones on 5/06/1960 with whom she had two kids in 1961 and 1964. The couple separated on 3/19/1976, formally divorcing on 5/10/1978. Her name was linked with 28-year old Roddy Llewellyn for several years before he married another in 1981.

A smoker for some years, she had a mild stroke on 2/24/1998 while dining with friends on Mystique. She has had, however, a life marked by illness. On 1/03/2001, the palace announced that she may have had another "mild stroke," and once more on 3/27/2001.

The Princess had a stroke on the evening of 2/08/2001 and was taken to the hospital. She died shortly after 6:30 AM on 2/09/2002, three days after the 50th anniversary of the death of her father, George VI.
