Biography
German expressionist painter who visited Paris in 1903 and 1906, deeply impressed with Van Gogh's work. Soon after the visits, Marc began to express his pantheistic belief of harmony between man and nature. He used color symbolically in works such as "The Blue Horse," "Red Horses," 1911 and "Destinies," 1913. He also wrote many essays that echoed Kandinsky's belief in the spiritual and mystical element of art. By 1914, he was beginning to paint non-figurative dynamic curvilinear compositions which were based on the interaction of abstract color shapes.
Marc died in WW I, 3/04/1916, Verdun, France.
