Biography

Italian actor, screenwriter and director or both comedy and drama. He worked on radio and in stage revues, then after WW II, proved himself a skilled dramatic actor on the legitimate stage. Manfredi began his film work by doing voice-over, dubbing voices of other actors, something frequently done in Italian films. He began to appear onscreen in 1949, the beginning of a long and steady career both as leading man and supporting player. His directing credits have been minimal, an episode in 1962 and a film in 1971, "The Cross-Eyed Saint," for which he won the Cannes Film Festival Best Film prize.

The Italian actor died in Rome on June 4, 2004. He had been hospitalized since suffering a stroke some months prior to his death.
