Biography
Greek ecclesiastic who served as an Archbishop as well as the President of Cyprus. In 1948, he was elected bishop and in 1950 rose to the position of Archbishop. He was elected to the office of President of Cyprus three times, first in December 1959, again in 1968, and in 1973; he was overthrown by a military coup in August 1974 and fled to Europe.
In December 1974, he was able to return to his country and reassume the office of president. Though a shrewd politician and publicist, he was nonetheless implicated in Eoka terrorism, a development which resulted in arrest and imprisonment for a period. Makarios died on 8/03/1977
