Biography
American journalist and broadcaster, Lydon is perhaps best known as host of "The Connection," a thoughtful call-in public broadcasting radio show that covers a wide variety of issues from history and politics to science to popular culture and everything in between. Considered by many to be a Renaissance thinker, Lydon began broadcasting the show in September 1994 on Boston’s WBUR. Although the show had run successfully for six years, in mid-2000 WBUR entered into negotiations with NPR (National Public Radio) in an attempt to increase revenues and an already sizable listening audience. Lydon and senior producer Mary McGrath made a pitch for a share of ownership and revenue growth, claiming the show as their "intellectual product." The station refused their demands, offering substantial pay increases instead, but Lydon and McGrath were adamant. The negotiations became increasingly bitter and acrimonious e-mails and letters between the parties began appearing in the news media. Finally, on February 16, 2001, both Lydon and McGrath were placed on a two-week paid leave of absence and told to leave the building. The following day, the pair turned in their resignation. Lydon graduated from Yale in 1962 after which he covered politics in the 60s and 70s. For 15 years, he hosted the 10 o'clock news on a Boston TV channel until his unsuccessful run for mayor of Boston in 1993 on a platform that promised radical school reform. He began "The Connection" shortly after that.
